Less-Than-TruckLoad Carriers Form New Trade Association
The Motor Freight Carriers Association (MFCA) has opened for business in Washington, D.C.The new trade group, which is not associated with the American Trucking Associations, was formed by six major LTL carriers, and will concern itself exclusively with LTL issues. The MFCA includes Trucking Management Inc., the labor negotiating arm of the LTL industry, never a part of the ATA. The MFCA will be led by Timothy Lynch, previously an ATA lobbyist. According to sources at ATA, Lynch is an expert on LTL issues and maintains good relationships with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. With the National Master Freight Agreement up for renewal early in the coming year, MFCA will focus on negotiations with the Teamsters. Initially, at least, the new trade group stressed good relations with the Teamsters. Lynch invited new members, but said that the MFCA is not in competition with the ATA. He urged his members to maintain ATA memberships as well. ATA spokesman Jim Lewis wished the new association well, describing its goals as complimentary to those of the ATA. The founding MFCA members are Roadway Express of Akron, Ohio; Yellow Freight Systems of Overland Park, Kansas; Consolidated Freightways of Menlo Park, California; ABF Freight Systems of Fort Smith, Arkansas; New Penn Motor Express of Lebanon, Pennsylvania, and A-P-A Transport Corp. of North Bergen, New Jersey.
