Engine Manufacturers Assn. Issues Premium Diesel Fuel Guidelines
The Engine Manufacturers Assn. has issued a voluntary Recommended Guideline for premium diesel fuel.
After a formal review by fuel and fuel additive suppliers, distributors, vehicle and fleet owners and trade associations, FQP-1A was established. The guideline describes the properties of a premium diesel fuel that is intended to perform better than diesel fuel meeting the requirements of American Society for Testing and Materials D975.
Compared to D975, features of the EMA premium diesel fuel include:
Higher cetane number/index to improve engine starting and operation and reduce noise and white smoke.
Minimum lubricity to protect fuel injection equipment.
Detergency to reduce deposit formation.
Accelerated stability.
Maximum API gravity to ensure minimum energy content.
Reduced carbon residue.
Reduced distillation temperatures.
Low-temperature operability to protect against filter plugging.
Maximum specifications for water and sediment content to protect injection equipment and fuel filters.
The guideline was designed to address the needs such as higher performance, reduced engine wear and improved fuel stability of may heavy duty engine users.
For more information on FQP-1A, contact Colleen Schiewe, EMA Fluids Group Coordinator, (312) 644-6610.
Department of Energy Offers Info On Alternative Fuel Vehicles
The U.S. Department of Energy now offers an information kit designed to help truck operators understand federal legislation regarding Alternative-Fuel Vehicles. The campaign is designed to educate consumers about the nations petroleum consumption and to encourage a switch to alternative energy sources.
The AFV package features color-coded brochures discussing such topics as what legislative mandates require, who must comply and when, which AFV options make the most sense for particular applications, frequently asked questions and AFV case studies.
For current news and information on AFVs contact the U.S. Department of Energys National Alternative Fuels Hotline, (800) 423-1DOE, or visit DOEs internet sites: www.eren.doe.gov/office/transportation/ and www.afdc.doe.gov/.
