Lee Crittenden Memorial Scholarship Presented

The National Private Truck Council has presented the first Private Fleet Management Institute scholarship award in honor of Lee J. Crittenden, who died in April. Crittenden was senior vice president of industry relations for Associates Commercial Corp. and a strong supporter of professional development in the trucking industry.
“Lee committed his professional life to the betterment of the transportation industry, providing leadership through the development of unique and innovative programs,” said Richard G. Lanahan, president of the Associates Transportation Group. “This scholarship fund is a wonderful tribute to Lee and will ensure that his contributions to the industry will continue for generations to come.”
The scholarship, valued at $2,630, includes registration for PFMI’s six-day Fleet/Transportation Management Institute and NPTC’s annual certification examination for 1999, along with a complete set of the Institute’s Desk Reference Set. NPTC intends to present this new award each year to the certification candidate from a council member’s fleet who achieves the highest score in the annual scholarship competition.
The first Lee J. Crittenden Memorial Scholarship Award was presented to Sterling E. Farber, corporate transportation manager for Nellcor Puritan Bennett Corp., Lenexa, KS. Farber also is the founder of the Exceptionals — a softball league for disabled children and is active in church and community affairs.
PFMI also presented a scholarship to Bonnie W. Iahn, manager of fleet operations, Dan River Inc., Danville, VA. Iahn started at Dan River in 1980 as an administrative assistant and worked her way up to manage the textile manufacturer’s fleet of 25 tractors and 90 trailers. She is active in the International Management Council.
