Allison Automatics Cover 10,000 To 30,000 Pounds GVW

In June 1999, Allison Transmissions will introduce the first of a new family of automatic transmissions especially designed for light and medium trucks in the 10,000- to 30,000-pound GVW (Class 3-7) range.
Full production of the 1000 Series is scheduled for September 1999; January 2000 for the 2000 and 2400 series. They are totally new products that will eventually replace today’s AT500 family.
The new transmissions are fully automatic, electronic five-speed units with overdrive and lockup. Allison engineers say the new boxes will bring the same performance, reliability/durability and shift quality offered by Allison’s larger WT (World) transmissions.
This will be Allison’s first venture into automatics specifically for Class 3, 4 and 5 medium duty markets (GVWs of 10,000 to 19,500 pounds), which in Ford, GM and Dodge products have been automatics upgraded from passenger cars and light trucks.
The entire product line offers shift-under-power, fully automatic transmissions with helical gears similar to gearing in the larger World Transmission models. The 1000, 2000 and 2400 series offer a range of common features that include:
     • Five forward speeds for maximum ratio coverage for urban route delivery and school bus applications as well as superior performance and fuel economy for over-the-road, one-way rental trucks and motorhomes. There are different ratios for the 1000 and 2000 series.
     • Torque converter with integral lockup clutch in second through fifth gears and spring damper.
     • Planetary gearbox design.
     • Electronic controls.
     • Parking pawl for the 1000 and 2400 series that can hold full vehicle weight up to 26,000 pounds.
The 1000 Series has dual-access, turbine-driven PTOs at the three and nine o’clock positions. Coupled with neutral lockup, engine speed equals PTO speed, enabling power equipment to be precisely speed-controlled over a broad range of working rpms.
The series also offers a full range of service diagnostics and safety features. An optional input retarder is planned for the 2000 and 2400 series models to deliver superior secondary braking, improved downhill brake control and reduced brake lining wear.
A three-year unlimited warranty is standard with the new transmissions. Four and five-year warranty packages are optional.
Allison has invested $200 million in the new plant and tooling for the transmissions. Capacity will be 104,000 units annually by late 2000, according to Allison President Dan Hancock. By comparison, Allison’s total capacity for all other transmission families is 140,000 units annually. The 2000 Series will eventually replace today’s AT500 Series transmission
