The Scales Begin To Tip
Computers from Palm Inc. (www.palm.com), still dominate the handheld market they virtually created. But the Palm Pilots that run the Palm operating system appear to be losing ground to handhelds that run Microsoft operating systems Windows CE and Pocket PC 2002.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Palm's share of the handheld, or PDA (Personal Digital Assistant), market fell from 50 percent to 32 percent in the last quarter. The Pocket PC made by Compaq accounts for a good part of the loss, having doubled its market share from 8 to 16 percent.
Meanwhile, a number of trucking technology sources say fleets are tending to favor Microsoft-based to Palm-based products, particularly larger operations with IT departments.
