Analysis Of New Hours Service Under Way

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration crossed another milestone in the years-long effort to revise truck driver hours of service rules.
It has reviewed the 50,000 comments submitted on its proposed revisions, and asked a consulting company to prepare an in-depth analysis of a new set of alternatives.
Under law, the agency is not permitted to discuss the details of the alternatives. But the consulting contract makes it clear that the agency wants to respond to industry criticisms of its original proposal.
For example, it wants the consultant to analyze the direct costs of the rule, which could include the cost of hiring and training new drivers and buying new trucks in order to compensate for slower delivery schedules under the new rules.
Onboard recorders to track driver hours still are under consideration for some types of companies, according to a source.
It will take another seven months to complete the analysis, and any proposals that emerge will be subject to public comment.
