Heavy Duty Trucking Editors Win Two More Prizes

Four members of Heavy Duty Trucking's editorial team have been honored in the 2002 Jesse H. Neal Editorial Achievement competition. They won a Neal Award -- the Pulitzer of business journalism -- for their September 2001 Killer Chemicals cover story exposing states' use of harmful highway de-icers. The story was named Best Single Article by a panel of independent judges.
The winning journalists are Deborah Whistler, Editor; Steve Sturgess, Senior Editor; Oliver Patton, Washington Editor, and Jim Winsor, Executive Editor.
Patton also won a Neal Certificate of Merit for Best News Coverage, for his reporting on safety issues surrounding NAFTA.
The cover story revealed that new de-icing agents containing magnesium chloride are being used to clear roads in winter, and are eating into electrical wiring, truck frames, suspension parts and even brake shoes.
The HDT staff obtained a copy of an unreleased study that indicates the chemicals being applied by states are even damaging bridge structures and the highways themselves. The story also reported fears that the de-icers are a threat to groundwater, trees and animals, and that they may even be carcinogenic.
The editors interviewed researchers, state officials and fleets, and offered readers advice on how to minimize damage to their trucks and trailers.
Heavy Duty Trucking editors have now won 22 prizes in Neal competition--more than any other trucking publication.
The Neal program is sponsored by American Business Media. This year there were 967 entries from all types of business publications. They competed for 23 awards.
Final judges were Marshall Loeb, CBS Marketwatch columnist; Diane Henriques, The New York Times; Jill Dutt, The Washington Post; Abe Peck, Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism; Dan Ranly, University of Missouri School of Journalism; Don Christianson, editor emeritus, IEEE Spectrum; and Frank Lalli, former editor, George.
