After working for 19 years with the Volvo organization and progressing to the position of executive vice president-commercial operations, Young had the opportunity to realize a dream and bought the factory-owned dealership in Charlotte, N.C., in 1995. Since then, the operation has grown and now includes four full-service sales and parts facilities plus two full-service leasing operations.
In what he calls "holistic selling," Young encourages and motivates all employees to sell all aspects of the dealership, with a bonus for any employee bringing in a new customer. This has resulted in writing checks to, say, a service technician for a new truck sale. Compensation plans are performance based and focused on what's right for the customer.
Between 1996 and 2000, the dealership was among the top five Volvo dealers in sales and in the top 10 in engines. During that time it was also in the top five commercial dealers for GMC, including the top dealer in 1999.
