Qualcomm Boosts Security

Qualcomm has introduced upgrades for its OmniTRACS mobile communications system and partnered with ALK Technologies, Princeton, N.J., to enhance security for mobile communications customers.
OmniTRACS now offers three security enhancements, Driver Authentication, Wireless Panic Button and Tamper Detection.
Driver Authentication verifies driver identification and authorization to operate the vehicle through use of a unique ID and password with configurable alerts. The driver login is validated over-the-air through an interface with the secure database at Qualcomm's OmniTRACS Network Management Center.
Wireless Panic Button extends the capability of the current in-dash panic button with an inexpensive wireless transmitter drivers can use should their safety become threatened while they're outside the vehicle.
The Tamper Detection feature alerts fleet management or the driver if an attempt is made to disable the OmniTRACS unit.
OmniTRACS will also integrate with the FleetCommander tracking system from ALK, which automatically alerts fleet managers of vehicles off planned routes. FleetCommander can also be combined with ALK's PC*MILER/HAZMAT for routing and tracking hazardous materials.
Meanwhile Qualcomm has introduced version 5.1 of its FleetAdvisor operations system for private fleets, including support for 802.11b wireless communications.

Cadec Adds Secureseal

Cadec Corporation is now the exclusive North American distributor for Secureseal.
Using a unique random number mechanism, Secureseal generates a new set of random numbers when the seal is closed. These numbers are recorded on a delivery manifest or through a Web-based program. If, upon delivery, the numbers do not match the numbers on the manifest, then it is evident the trailer door was opened and the delivery is no longer considered safe or secure.

BlackHawk Tracker

The iNet-Blue Corp., Boulder, Colo., has introduced the Tra-X-all BlackHawk System for tracking valuable and/or dangerous cargo.
In its announcement, iNet said the BlackHawk system is especially well-suited for un-tethered trailers, reefers, and containers not already fitted with GPS or other security and location systems. According to the company, BlackHawk is "reusable."
"By reusable we mean that the unit's intended purpose is to be attached to the cargo/container/trailer only for the period of time when it is necessary to track and secure the shipment,"' said iNet marketing director Kurt T. Kyvik.
"The BlackHawk unit may remain with the shipment as it is transferred to different modes of transportation. The BlackHawk unit may be owned and monitored by the shipper/consignee as opposed to being owned and monitored by the carrier/shipping company. Once the shipment has been completed the unit is detached from the mounting bracket and is available to be attached to another shipment," Kyvik said.

Tripmaster TKO Series

Tripmaster Corp., Arlington, Texas, has introduced the TKO Series of onboard systems.
The TKO Series design allows smaller fleets, and those with mixed vehicle sizes, to affordably capture vehicle and driver performance data. Adding a GPS receiver to the TKO introduces automated electronic DOT logs, hands-free state mileage, and downloaded route assignments.
Available in three models, the TKO Series systems use a new self-contained, terminal/keypad platform that collects data through onboard sensors or the J-1708 data bus<.

PrePass, E-Z Pass Compatible

Truckers will now be able to use one transponder for both PrePass weigh station preclearance and paying E-ZPass tolls. The new service called PrePass(Plus) is expected to be operational this summer. Interoperability requires the new Ubiquity transponder from Mark IV.
An agreement between HELP Inc. and the New York State Thruway Authority will enable participating carriers to electronically comply with requirements at nearly 200 PrePass weigh stations nationwide. Participating PrePass members will have the opportunity to pay tolls electronically at nearly 400 E-ZPass toll plaza facilities in New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Massachusetts and West Virginia.

Web Management

      J. J. Keller & Associates , Neenah, Wis., has developed a new service to control a variety of transportation personnel functions right from users' desktops.
Keller provides Driver Management Online over the Internet as an ASP (Active Service Provider). According to the company, Driver Management Online streamlines driver qualification file management, job-applicant review, alcohol and drug test reporting, employee file management, training administration and more. When hiring, users can electronically gather pre-employment reports, set hiring criteria, sort through applications, and select qualified applicants.

PeopleNet Automated Logs

PeopleNet Communications is developing an automated driver log program called eDriver Logs expected to launch later this year.
According to PeopleNet, the switch from paper to electronic format makes logs easier for drivers while reducing errors and providing information for fleet management.
"Because dispatchers will have immediate access to log information, they can do a better job of route scheduling, assigning loads to specific drivers and help reduce drivers' hours of service violations. From the driver's perspective, the system reduces the time they need to spend entering data into their logbook," said David Ladner, PeopleNet General Manger, Transportation and Logistics.
