Western Star Premium Conventional

Western Star Trucks has introduced a low-profile, "LowMax" version of the Western Star 4900 EX heavy-duty truck. Featuring a lowered cab and sleeper height, it is loaded with styling features for maximum driver appeal.
LowMax is available as a highway tractor in a 132-inch BBC (bumper-to-back-of-cab) dimension with a set-forward front axle. The extended hood, dual stacks and close-to-the-road design can be complemented by chrome and stainless steel accessories available through Western Star dealers. Inside, operators can select premium interior trim packages from a number of available options.
With its lowered step height, the LowMax 4900 EX gives the operator easy access to the cab. The truck's low center of gravity also provides advantages in road handling and stability, says the company. In addition, Western Star engineers reduced the frontal area of the truck, creating significant aerodynamic enhancements. The minimum overall height is just over 104 inches with the cab lights and horns removed and with low-profile 275/70 R22.50-inch tires.
Standard equipment includes a 1,300-square-inch cross-flow radiator for optimum engine cooling. A low-ride-height front suspension and 6.38-inch ride height AirLiner rear suspension contribute to the low-profile design. The Dana Spicer E-13201 front axle has a 5-inch drop. The dual 6-inch exhaust stacks feature horizontal low-noise mufflers. For routine maintenance, the LowMax offers enhanced accessibility to the engine and service points along the firewall. It is also easier than ever for the operator to clean the windshield.
The tractor is available with a range of sleeper sizes and roof heights, all arranged to the lowered configuration.

High Security Padlocks

Herculock says its solid-brass padlocks provide long-term reliable operation for business and industrial security. The corrosion-proof padlocks can be shipped in only two weeks keyed to user's existing lock, Herculock says. The weather-ready solid-brass design eliminates possibility of corrosion damage due to salt spray, acid rain and other environmental pollution, according to the company. The tumbler pin padlocks can be keyed alike, differently or matched to user's existing padlocks, eliminating multiple-key hassles. The rugged padlocks are available in widths from 1 1/8 to2 1/16", with shackle clearances from 7/8 to 8" and shackle diameters from 3/16 to 5/16".

Electronic Hub Odometer

Stemco has introduced a new mileage counter and trip recorder, the DataTrac electronic hubodometer. Called DataTrac, the odometer is claimed to be an accurate, easy to use mileage counter that is completely electronic with no moving parts. Weighing 5.6 ounces and powered by a lithium battery, it provides both trip and life readings. The new product offers an easy to read LCD display that allows it to be used with clearance in a wide variety of transportation applications.

Lightweight Hubs

Gunite says its new generation of Ductilite hubs actually weigh less than aluminum hubs designed for comparable axle ratings.
This patented casting configuration allows Gunite to offer fleets all of the advantages in reliability and durability of a cast iron hub without adding any additional weight over the comparable aluminum hub.
These new ductile iron hubs are currently available for all popular front axle applications up to 14,600 pounds GAWR. Unlike aluminum hubs, which have limited axle applications due to axle ratings, Gunite Ductilite hubs are compatible with all vehicles in a fleet regardless of axle ratings, and they are compatible with all existing wheels and drums.
Drive axle versions of this hub are being developed.

Remote Fluid Level Sensing

Felsted Products says its patented Fluid Level Indicator is not just another dipstick.
The Felsted system provides enhanced operator access to remote fluid reservoirs such as engine oil and transmission fluid. It provides easier operation, improved sealing, routing, and measurement accuracy for both OEMs and end users, according to the company.
Applications include engine oil check, engine oil fill, and transmission oil check/fill.
Major engine manufacturers and truck builders are using the product to help eliminate leaks and blow-by on current and new EPA engine platforms as an improvement over existing dipsticks.

Stepped Exhaust Clamp

Donaldson says its new Stepped SealClamp exhaust clamp features an innovative stepped design.
The Stepped SealClamp is a full 360-degree, preformed stainless steel (aluminized option also available) clamp designed for overlapping tube connections including muffler inlets, outlets, slotted joints and flex tubing.
The unique stepped reaction block conforms to tubes in overlapping connections to eliminate flex pinch and minimize leaks. The exhaust clamp's unique shape features an inside sealing surface that matches the stepped shape of an overlapped joint, providing a critical seal for minimizing exhaust leaks.
According to Donaldson, straight bar designs cause the clamp to lift on the large diameter, creating the opportunity for leaks. The grooved stepped reaction block acts as an installation aid as the groove closes during bolt tightening ensuring proper torque.
Installation is simplified with the one-piece nut bar that allows for one-wrench installing. No disconnecting or welding and no extra sealing pads, seals or gaskets are required for installation. In addition, all hardware and fasteners have been treated with a corrosion resistant coating.

Smoke Opacity Meter

Fleet personnel can immediately determine if a diesel truck will pass state standards and interstate emission programs by using OTC's portable, No. RM1020C Smoke Check 1667 Diesel Smoke Opacity Tester.
Since the smoke opacity is measured within the stack, tests can be accurately performed even in windy conditions, with only one operator required. Virtually no warm-up is needed, making random roadside testing easy.
A digital LCD screen walks the operator through each step, and a verifying printout of test results is produced. The meter meets the latest SAE J1667 specifications, and it has been used for enforcement in California, New York, Illinois, and the majority of states testing for diesel emissions compliance.

Pad-Mount Alternator

Denso has announced its Pad Mount Brushless Alternator for the over-the-road truck market. Designed specifically for use on Class 8 engines, the "Pad Mount" signifies that the alternator is mounted directly to the engine block, providing durability in high-vibration applications. Features include a compact and lightweight design, 80-amp output at 1,800 rpm, heavy duty front and rear bearings, corrosion-resistant windings, and non-soldered connections.
