Bill Would Aid Drivers Harmed By Border Opening

One of the arguments against admitting long-haul Mexican trucks is that it would cost U.S. drivers their jobs. Now that the border is about to open, Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., is proposing that the government help drivers who do lose their jobs.
Her proposal would provide "trade adjustment assistance" to any truck driver adversely affected by the opening.
"The TAA exists out of recognition that our decision on trade in Washington causes very specific groups of American workers to lose jobs," Boxer said in a statement. "TAA provides those workers with the assistance they need to successfully transition to new jobs."
