Doug Condra has been appointed President of Newport Communications, the nation's leader in trucking media. He succeeds Kent Powell, who becomes Chairman of the Board.
In addition, Heavy Duty Trucking Editor Deborah Whistler takes on added responsibilities as Editorial Director of all Newport media, which includes RoadStar and Truck Sales & Leasing magazines; Heavy Duty Trucking Hotline newsletter; the industry's leading web site, truckinginfo.com, and RoadStar Radio News, the No. 1 trucker radio news broadcast.
Condra, a 30-year veteran with Newport, moves up from Senior Vice President. He remains Publisher of HDT and TS&L. He began his career here as HDT Editor, and has won 14 Jesse H. Neal prizes, plus the lifetime Crain Award for contributions to excellence in the business press.
Whistler has been with Newport for 20 years, starting as a staff reporter. She has covered virtually every area of the industry while winning 12 Neal prizes — second only to Condra among the nation's trucking editors.
Powell, who also began as an editor, converted Heavy Duty Trucking from a western regional magazine into the industry's leading publication. He spearheaded Newport's growth from a one-magazine publisher into today's multi-media operation specializing in trucking.
He continues to serve Newport in an advisory capacity, with Condra taking on day-to-day operations responsibility. Both report to Newport CEO Jim Hutchinson.
"Our biggest strength has always been to provide an advertising environment of editorial quality that brings the reader into our publications," said Hutchinson. "This transition assures that we will continue to provide an environment that assures advertisers that their message will be seen by our readers."
In addition to its three magazines and other media, Newport operates the Newport Poster Network, produces the Paul K. Young Memorial Truck Beauty Show held in conjunction with the Mid-America Trucking Show and is affiliated with the Stars & Stripes Truck Show Series.
