Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., offers Fleet Management Tools, a tire management software CD for $495. According to Al Cohn, manager of training and technology, the software supports sampling.
"No fleet can successfully track every tire from birth to death over multiple retreads. It's impossible. It takes too much time. It costs too much and you don't learn anything from that. So we strongly recommend in the real world that if you have three different types of vehicles and you have maybe two different service locations, that you track samples, maybe five Macks and five Navistars or 10 Macks and 10 Navistars, or something that you can put your hands around and do a good job on that. Then you can extrapolate that to your entire fleet," Cohn explained.
"We record when you mount the tire, you do interim inspections for tread depth, for wear conditions, for valve caps, things on that order. We use the Palm Pilot so you can enter all your data right into the Palm and upload it right to your computer," he said.
