RFID Beyond Wal-Mart
Wal-Mart isn't the only entity adopting active RFID technology. The U.S. Department of Defense will require suppliers to provide RFID tags on many items. So may other government agencies.
Meanwhile, active RFID is a hot topic in a number of industries, most notably pharmaceuticals, where the value of small items can justify even fairly expensive tags. Should RFID be adopted throughout that industry, fleets serving pharmaceutical companies might want to invest in readers to verify counts and track high-risk shipments. That could also apply to shippers of electronics and similar high-value freight.
After all, if the tags are going to be there, paid for and applied by the shipper, it's in every fleet's interest to consider how reading those tags might be useful - or not - especially in tracking freight and reducing claims.
