EPA Offers Grants For Idling Reduction

The Environmental Protection Agency is offering $5 million to help demonstrate idling reduction technologies for trucking.
The grant money will be available to states, nonprofits and schools, EPA said. The agency is specifically looking for technologies that small fleets can install on trucks they already own, that manufacturers can build for aftermarket installation, or that can be used when a truck is parked. The aim is to save fuel and cut back on pollution.
The agency pointed to a number of current technologies as examples. Among them: Cummins Engine Co.'s automatic engine shut-down system; battery-powered heating and cooling systems; auxiliary generator systems; and plug-in systems typically available at truckstops.
Proposals are due by June 6. More information on the grants is available at EPA's web site: www.epa.gov/otaq/smartway.
