Eaton Fuller Set to Release New Medium Duty Ultrashift HV Transmission
Medium-duty fleets now have another choice among transmissions, Roadranger Eaton Fuller has announced.
The Ultrashift HV (highway value) automated transmission will take its place among other Ultrashift transmissions, notably the Class 8 Ultrashift HD, its big brother.
On the other end of the family tree, the hybrid power system provides new blood for future markets. But the HV will step into the component fray, boasting significant increases in fuel economy. SAE J1526, Type III in-service test procedures showed fuel economy gains of 7 percent to 19 percent, depending upon the application.
The HV completes Eaton's offerings in its line of medium-duty transmissions and complements Ultrashift HD for normal duty pick-up and delivery, service/utility and recovery and expedited freight applications. The transmission is currently available as an SQ option in International's 4300 chassis in both five- and six-speed arrangements.
The Ultrashift HV saves fuel primarily by achieving "lock up" at 3 mph, in stark contrast to the typical automatic transmission's lock-up speed of 24 mph.
"Until lock up is achieved, the truck is wasting power and fuel," explained Bill Gross, product manager for Eaton's medium-duty transmissions. The HV "provides a significant improvement in fuel economy, particularly in stop-and-go operations." The new transmission is lubed for life and provides substantial life cycle cost savings, according to Eaton.
