Getting The Message Out Through Recognition Programs

Technician recognition programs are helpful in recruiting through vocational technical schools and are a good tool for retention of quality employees. Like truck drivers, technicians can be job hoppers, looking for higher pay, better working conditions and recognition for performance.
A new Technician of the Year award program was recently created by Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems, Dayton Parts, Haldex and SKF. Darrell Gravely, the first recipient of the award, received the honor at a special ceremony at the recent Heavy Duty Aftermarket Week. Graveley's exemplary career at Southeastern Freight Lines and many certificates demonstrate what is possible to accomplish as a technician. His success will help manufacturers and fleets attract more qualified applicants as his accomplishments are promoted.
The Technology and Maintenance Council also has a new competition called the National Technician Skills Competition, or TMC SuperTech. This contest is open to any employed tech who is also a TMC Technician member. The competition includes written as well as hands-on skills tests.
Robert Braswell, technical director of TMC notes such competitions are a new method of upgrading the technicians' profession and attracting candidates to the work.
"Nothing has been done at the professional level to attract and retain technicians in the past 50 years. We're hoping to change that," Braswell said.
