International Introduces Tire-Battery Display

International Truck and Engine Corp. has demonstrated a new tire and battery monitoring technology that will be introduced on its International 8600 model. A high-resolution on-board color display screen makes it easy for drivers to check tire pressure and battery health.
The tire pressure monitoring system quickly and accurately identifies tire temperature and pressure. The system relies on International's multiplexed electrical system and pressure sensors. The battery monitor provides drivers with information on battery voltage and state of charge for engine cranking.
Optional exterior cameras that reveal blind spots and provide assistance when backing can also feed images into the on-board information display.
"These features will reduce downtime and roadside repair expenses," said Gaylynn Skelnik, segment marketing manager, Heavy Vehicles, International Truck and Engine. "If a tire is low or a battery is about to fail, this technology warns the driver in advance."
Other International 8600 made possible by the DiamondLogic multiplexed system include:
      • Pre-trip exterior light inspection, which provides an automated check of vehicle lights including headlights, brake lights, turn signals and marker lights. This means a driver, when conducting a vehicle walk-around to check lamps, doesn't have to re-enter the truck constantly to adjust lamp settings.
      • The system automatically activate high beams (from daytime running lights) when windshield wipers are activated.
      • Windshield wiper speed control adjusts wipers to the slowest intermittent speed if the wipers are on once the park brake is set to prevent dry wipe damage.
      • Parking brake alarm alerts the driver if they fail to set the park brake before leaving the truck. If the ignition switch is off, the parking brake is not set, and if a cab door is open, an alarm will sound.
      • The theft deterrent system requires a driver to enter a predetermined code on the switch panel once the parking brake is released. Otherwise, the engine shuts down within seconds. The system is intended to help reduce truck thefts, and it offers safety and security to drivers, especially those carrying hazardous loads.

BorgWarner System Standard On Freightliners

BorgWarner Thermal Systems fans and fan drives will be standard equipment on all Freightliner Class 8 trucks, beginning Jan. 1, 2007.
Under the three-year agreement, Freightliner Class 8 trucks will be equipped with the Kysor On/Off fan drive, which features dynamic torque capacity, resulting in improved cooling capability. The trucks will also use the new X-Series fan from BorgWarner, which enables Freightliner's heavy-duty vehicles to meet the North American emissions standards while optimizing cooling performance.

Qwik-Shot Dielectric Grease Tubes Easy To Use

Phillips Industries recently introduced Qwik-Shot one-use dielectric grease tubes. Using dielectric grease protects electrical connections and stops corrosion by sealing out moisture, high heat and contaminants.
Phillips recommends the use of dielectric grease prior to installation and every time electrical connections are disconnected to increase vehicle reliability and safety. The tubes are an easy way to have dielectric grease available whenever it's needed.

Air-Weigh Has J1708 Interface

Air-Weigh announced that its 5800 Series of on-board truck scales now allows weight information to be transferred to the truck's J1708 data bus.
Now, on-board computers and communication systems can use Air-Weigh weight data for on-board applications or transmission over a wireless network to a customer site host.
The Air-Weigh 5800 Series of on-board truck scales is permanently installed in the dash and calibrated to each suspension on the vehicle. The 2-inch gauge display automatically shows each axle group's weight on one screen, with no operator interaction required. A single button press displays GVW and net payload weights. Trailer axle group weights from any Air-Weigh equipped trailer automatically appear on the axle weight screen and are included in the GVW and net payload.
SAE-defined drive, steer, trailer, GVW and payload weights are all available through the new J1708 data bus interface. Truck and trailer scales can also be calibrated by other on-board computer devices using SAE-defined data packets. Additionally, alarms and other system setup functions may be performed via proprietary packets.

Flying J Introduces Cab Comfort APU

Flying J Enterprise Solutions has released its new Cab Comfort System, a fully integrated high-end auxiliary power unit to help reduce truck engine idling and unnecessary emissions while providing in-cab comfort and convenience.
The standard system features a Kubota Z482 liquid-cooled engine that powers a direct drive 6kW 115VAC generator. Included are in-cab and outside GFCI receptacles, electrically powered battery charging, programmable in-cab controller with maintenance reminders, automatic start control in econo mode for cab temperature, battery voltage and coolant temperature for further fuel saving economics.

SwitchQuick Simplifies Trailer Switching Process

Drivers can now hook, drop and maneuver trailers hooked in tandem more safely, efficiently and cost-effectively, thanks to the new SwitchQuick trailer-connecting device.
"Currently, the typical procedure for hooking and dropping trailers has 49 steps," says Greg Helton, SwitchQuick president. "That process consumes an average of 32 minutes and requires the driver to exit and enter the cab 11 times. We realized that simplifying the process could save money in labor and fuel costs while reducing the risk of injury."
The SwitchQuick connecting device prevents the converter dolly from articulating when the vehicle backs up by bracing one or two struts from the dolly against the lead trailer with struts extended. The device is quick and easy to install, and minimal training is required.
Because the device is easy to use, it allows drivers to switch their trailers (typically two 28-foot trailers) more quickly.
"By cutting down on the time spent switching trailers, fleets and owner-operators are able to reduce labor costs for hooking and dropping time by as much as 33 percent," Helton says.
The SwitchQuick device also minimizes the risk of driver injury by reducing the number of times the driver must exit and enter the cab – the biggest cause of driver injury in the yard.

Kohler Power Systems Debuts APU

Kohler Power Systems is offering an auxiliary power unit for the heavy-duty trucking industry.
The new Kohler 5-kilowatt APU will be available later this year and will offer the only air-cooled APU in the 5kW, side-rail mounted size, according to the company. The air-cooled, self-contained engine means less intrusion into the truck's critical systems. Understanding that compactness is crucial, Kohler designed its first APU product to be one of the smallest and lightest air-cooled generators on the market, weighing less than 350 pounds.
The Kohler APU (120-volt AC and 50-Amp DC power) is also designed with a direct-drive alternator - a direct connection between the engine and alternator. By eliminating the alternator belts, Kohler is able to offer increased reliability and reduced maintenance issues. The Kohler APU also has an oil service interval of 500 hours to reduce maintenance costs.
The Kohler Advanced Digital Controller will come standard on the new APU product, which allows the driver to start and stop the generator, and adjust the heating and cooling, from inside the cab. The digital controller also features an easy-to-read LED screen that displays up to 13 operational conditions.

ArvinMeritor Touts FreedomLine

ArvinMeritor will discontinue making manual transmissions, instead placing greater emphasis on selling the FreedomLine automated manual transmission by ZF Friedrichshafen in Germany.

It will honor all current manual transmission orders received prior to September 2006, provided they are to be delivered no later than January 2007. All Meritor manual transmissions sold and in service will continue to be supported by the company's sales, service and aftermarket parts support teams.
"We are absolutely convinced that we have the most advanced and proven technology solution with the FreedomLine for our North American customers," said Tom Gosnell, president of the company's Commercial Vehicle Systems business unit.
Introduced in 1998, the FreedomLine can increase fuel efficiency by as much as 6 percent, according to fleet data, as well as helping with driver recruiting and retention issues, according to the company. The automated gearbox complements the Performance Plus lineup of Meritor axle-brake-suspension components, Sachs brand clutches and Meritor WABCO vehicle control systems.

International Offers Continental, General Tires

Continental Tire North America Inc. has signed an agreement with International Truck and Engine Corp. to supply International branded trucks with Continental tires.
This agreement will provide all International Truck dealers with the ability to order both the Continental and General Tire lines of tires as a published option.
Steve Gilligan, assistant general manager of International's Heavy Vehicle Center said "an expanded relationship with Continental supports International's growth strategies including share expansion in the line-haul segment, growth in new markets and introductions of new products including the new ProStar model tractor."
Clif Armstrong, Continental's director of original equipment and marketing, views the relationship as being beneficial to the end user. "Continental's HSL and HDL Eco Plus tires have proven themselves to be solid performers in the tire industry. The technologically advanced compounds help reduce rolling resistance, which can lead to better fuel economy."

ULSD Won't Faze '07 Engines, Cat Says

Caterpillar announced that new ultra low sulfur diesel fuel mandated for 2007 emissions requirements won't affect its 2007 engines with Acert technology.
Based on laboratory testing and field validation data, Cat engines for 2007 should continue to meet or exceed customer expectations for fuel economy, engine performance and maintenance, says the company.
"The power provided by Cat engines won't be affected at all by the use of ULSD fuel," said Greg Gauger, director, Caterpillar On-Highway Power Systems. "Our 2007 engines are designed to run on this fuel, and Cat customers should not experience any difference in power compared to current models."
Owners of 2007 Caterpillar C7 and C9 engines could gain up to 4 percent fuel economy improvement compared to 2006 engines, due to a new, more efficient fuel and air system. In addition to ULSD fuel, the new Cat engines for 2007 will use CJ-4 oil, which is lower in ash and contains less sulfur than previous oils to accommodate the new diesel particulate filter. The new CJ-4 oil and ULSD fuel can be used in previous engines as well, simplifying maintenance and fueling for owners of earlier model Caterpillar engines.
Similar to current Caterpillar engines with Acert technology, the 2007 engine line will be able to use biodiesel fuels. The guidelines for use of biodiesel and biodiesel blends are outlined in Caterpillar Commercial Diesel Engine Fluids Recommendations (SEBU6251, available from any Caterpillar dealer).

Hendrickson Extends Steertek Axle Warranty

Hendrickson officials announce the extension of the limited warranty on the Steertek truck and tractor steer axle to five years or 750,000 miles.
Offered in capacities from 12,000 to 14,600 pounds, Steertek comes standard with the Airtek integrated front air suspension system and Softek integrated front steel leaf suspension system.
The box-shaped cross section of the Steertek axle resists horizontal, vertical and twisting forces more effectively than traditional I-beam axles, enabling tires to maintain better contact with the road and helping to improve steer tire life.
The patented design also makes Steertek an extremely durable front axle that continues to demonstrate exceptional field performance. Together with suspension elements, the Steertek axle beam forms a torsion system, helping enhance roll stability characteristics and improve handling.

Grote's New LED Lamp Brightens Trailer Interiors

Grote Industries has unveiled a new line of bright, white LED lamps that do away with the typical dim, bluish cast of other LEDs.
Grote's 18-diode LED lamp were introduced to select fleet owners and original equipment manufacturers in July 2005, said Mike Grote, business development manager.
"This early in the launch, sales of our new LED lamps have rocketed past all expectations," he said, adding OEMs and fleet said they needed interior lights that provide bright light, demand less power, install easily and last significantly longer than incandescent and fluorescent lamps.
Grote's LED lamps demand less power than other types of interior lighting, according to the company, drawing only 2.1 amps for startup, compared to the 2.7 amps needed to start up a fluorescent lamp. Plus, the power demand to keep on an LED lamp remains low, making them an ideal solution in "no-idle" areas where engines must be switched off.
Unlike fluorescents, which take time to brighten in cold temperatures, Grote's LED lamps snap instantly to life. They even work better in the cold. At -40 degrees Fahrenheit, they are still instant-on and instant-bright.
Grote's LED lamps are easier to install, the company says, because the wiring set-up is more forgiving, Grote noted. The self-contained LED units are far more tamper resistant than incandescent set-ups, which can tempt drivers to swap in bulbs that are over-rated for the fixture, causing a potential fire hazard.
LED lamps last, in many cases, for as long as the trailer lasts.
